WELCOME

Kilauea Point Natural History Association (KPNHA) works in cooperation with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to promote interpretive, educational, and scientific projects that focus on Hawaii's islands, among the most unique and interesting islands in the world. This website gives you an introduction to KPNHA and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

KPNHA is a non-profit, tax-exempt educational corporation. Gifts to the association are tax-deductible in accordance with current Internal Revenue Service Regulations. Independent of

government funding, Its work is sustained by memberships, contributions, and sales from a gift shop it operates at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on the North Shore of Kauai.

At the shop, KPNHA makes available a wide variety of pamphlets, books, maps, posters, artwork and other natural history items to enhance the visitor's understanding of Hawaiian ecosystems.

All proceeds are utilized by KPNHA to further its educational and interpretive goals. An important project of KPNHA is to develop environmental awareness among Hawaii's children. An example is Hawaii Nature Focus, a natural history educational publication distributed free to Hawaii's schools and now presented electronically on this website. Other KPNHA programs are also showcased.

The Association headquarters are on the 32-acre peninsula bluff high above the surging northern swells at the northernmost tip of Kauai, site of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Here stands the historic Kilauea Lighthouse, built in 1913 to guide trans-Pacific shipping fleets through the Hawaiian archipelago. The area offers sweeping views of the spectacular, rugged coast, an island bird sanctuary and excellent vantage points from which
to observe Pacific marine life. Here the visitor may see native Hawaiian Wild Things including bird life (Red-footed Boobies, Laysan Albatross, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, White and Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Great Frigatebirds, Pacific Golden Plovers) marine life (Pacific Green Sea Turtles, Spinner Dolphins, Hawaiian Humpback Whales) and coastal plants (alula, naupaka, hala, ulei, pohinahina and ilima).

Come visit us at one of the most spectacular of Hawaiian places, or enjoy us here on the web!

Aloha!
