Four Month Closure - January through April 2016
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has announced the closure of the refuge for four months, starting in early January 2016. Due to severe erosion along the cliff supporting the only pedestrian path to the lighthouse and wildlife viewing area, the walkway is considered a safety hazard to the public. The USFWS has contracted to have the existing infrastructure removed and rebuilt with new foundations into the 150 foot cliff.
There is an observation area just outside of the main gate. The current plan is to keep this viewing area open during the construction so that you can see much of the wildlife normally viewed from inside the refuge. Volunteers will be available to answer your questions and point out interesting sights from the viewing area.
During the closure, KPNHA will open a pop-up store in the Kung Lung Shopping Center in Kīlauea. Artwork, gifts, books and many of the other items normally for sale at the Visitor Center Bookstore will be available in the temporary store. Since the store revenues are important to continuing the charitable work of KPNHA, we appreciate your continued support through your purchases and donations.
